Then a certain monk went to the Blessed One and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, sat to one side. As he was sitting there, he said to the Blessed One: |
"Insofar as it disintegrates,2 monk, it is called the 'world.' Now what disintegrates? |
The ear disintegrates. Sounds disintegrate. Consciousness at the ear disintegrates. Contact at the ear disintegrates. And whatever there is that arises in dependence on contact at the ear — experienced as pleasure, pain or neither-pleasure-nor-pain — that too disintegrates. |
The nose disintegrates. Aromas disintegrate. Consciousness at the nose disintegrates. Contact at the nose disintegrates. And whatever there is that arises in dependence on contact at the nose — experienced as pleasure, pain or neither-pleasure-nor-pain — that too disintegrates. |
The tongue disintegrates. Tastes disintegrate. Consciousness at the tongue disintegrates. Contact at the tongue disintegrates. And whatever there is that arises in dependence on contact at the tongue — experienced as pleasure, pain or neither-pleasure-nor-pain — that too disintegrates. |
The body disintegrates. Tactile sensations disintegrate. Consciousness at the body disintegrates. Contact at the body disintegrates. And whatever there is that arises in dependence on contact at the body — experienced as pleasure, pain or neither-pleasure-nor-pain — that too disintegrates. |
The intellect disintegrates. Ideas disintegrate. Consciousness at the intellect consciousness disintegrates. Contact at the intellect disintegrates. And whatever there is that arises in dependence on contact at the intellect — experienced as pleasure, pain or neither-pleasure-nor-pain — that too disintegrates. |
Insofar as it disintegrates, it is called the 'world.' |
